Accountants Growing More Comfortable With AI’s Expanding Role

undefined

A new Accounting Today and Arizent survey suggests that most accountants are ready for artificial intelligence to take on more of the work that was once done by people. Nearly three-quarters (72%) of respondents said they feel comfortable using technology for jobs that traditionally required human effort, while 64% reported that their firms have already implemented technology for at least one of those tasks.

The findings suggest that, while concerns about AI replacing accountants persist in public discussion, professionals within the field are adapting quickly. More than half of respondents said AI is making them more effective and nearly half believe firms will eventually need fewer employees because of it. Still, only about a third said AI is making their jobs more enjoyable.

Firms of all sizes are experimenting with automation, though adoption is most common in larger firms, where staffing shortages continue to drive innovation. The most common areas where firms report using AI include research and fact-checking, client communications, and automating workflows.

Looking ahead, respondents agreed that proficiency with AI and other emerging technologies will be critical within the next few years. Over half said those skills will become “much more important,” signaling that the profession is preparing not just for automation, but for a redefined version of what it means to work in accounting.
