Due to budget considerations, the Senate parliamentarian said the pandemic relief bill cannot have a $15 minimum wage increase if it is to be passed via the reconciliation process, CNBC reported. Despite this, theĀ House remains poised to vote on its own bill, which does contain the increase, sometime today.
Democratic senators have not given up the fight, however, Bloomberg reported. Senate Budget Committee Chairman Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) and Senate Finance Committee Chair Ron Wyden (D-Ore.) raised the possibility of increasing taxes on corporations, whether by removing deductions from the bill or introducing a new tax entirely; in either case, both senators said their main targets would be companies that pay less than $15 an hour. Bloomberg said such maneuvers would likely allow the bill to fit within the budget reconciliation process, which would allow them to pass the package with a simple majority.
The alternative, according to Fortune, is an offer by moderate Republicans to increase the minimum wage to $10 an hour instead. But Fortune reported thatĀ Democrats are unlikely to accept such a compromise, first because they think it's inadequate and, second, because the GOP plan would come with a requirement that employers use e-verify to prevent business owners from hiring undocumented immigrants.
