NASBA Suspends Reporting on CPA Exam Performance

The National Association of State Boards of Accountancy (NASBA) has stopped reporting information about how candidates perform on the CPA exam, according to Accounting Today.  Colleges and universities have for many years used this information to rank their accounting programs.

The reason, said NASBA, is that it is preparing for the CPA Evolution initiative, a joint project with the AICPA to transform the CPA licensure model in order to reflect the changing skills and competencies--especially in technology--that the accounting profession will require in the years ahead.

“Due to the necessary and important focus on bringing CPA Evolution to fruition, including significant changes that must be made to NASBA’s technology and platforms to reflect the new exam and licensure structure, NASBA has ceased publishing the 'Candidate Performance on the Uniform CPA Examination' publication until this important transition is completed,”  NASBA said in an email Tuesday.

NASBA has posted a FAQ page that explains the change in policy. The change will take effect with the 2020 edition of the Candidate Performance Book. As to when NASBA will resume its reporting on CPA candidate performance, the FAQ page says, "With CPA Evolution, we know that the publication will require significant reformatting. Much of the information will not be comparable to prior statistical information published.  At earliest, we might publish newly formatted 2024 data in 2025."

Publications through 2019 will remain available on NASBA’s www.nasbareport.com website.
