House Bill Would Make Gym Memberships Tax Deductible

A new bill introduced in the House of Representatives aims to encourage healthier lifestyles by offering tax incentives to those who go to the gym or otherwise participate in fitness activities, according to Forbes. The bill, HR 1218, would allow the following things to be deducted as medical care:

  • membership at a fitness facility,
  • participation or instruction in a program of physical exercise or physical activity, and
  • equipment used in a program (including a self-directed program) of physical exercise or physical activity.

Qualifying fitness centers may not offer golf, hunting, sailing or riding facilities or be a private club owned and operated by its members, according to Forbes.

The deduction has a ceiling of $2,000 for couples, or $1,000 for single people.
