The Institute of Internal Auditors recently refreshed its Internal Auditing Competency Framework. This was created to optimize knowledge and skills throughout four key areas and 28 subcategories.

The Global Practice Guide and Templates provide a framework that could be customized and assist internal auditors, chief audit executives, as well as other audit leaders to define and meet the expectations of their roles.

The guide offers a practical approach and tools that these professionals could utilize to determine and meet their roles' expectations by incorporating the following three general features:

• An identification of the competency-related requirements of the Global Internal Audit Standards.

• An Internal Auditing Competency Framework that identifies significant groupings of knowledge and skill areas together with standardized expectations for proficiency levels.

• A section on how to utilize the Competency Framework Templates to assist in identifying and assessing relevant competencies, encourage continuous professional development, as well as follow the requirements set in the Standards.

This flexible framework lets each firm implement its priorities in its desired mix of competencies and proficiency levels.
