House Passes Funding Bill with Boosted Farm Aid, Children's Food Aid

The House passed a bill that would keep the government funded through Dec. 11, averting a potential government shutdown, said Bloomberg. The bill is a stopgap measure, as Congress will need to spend the winter crafting a series of more formal appropriations bills.

The measure, which will now need Senate approval, provides an extra $30 billion for the Department of Agriculture’s Commodity Credit Corp., a measure sought by both the White House as well as Democrats from rural states. It also contains $8 billion for a pandemic program to feed children who normally receive school lunches, an increase of $6 billion from what the Democrats had said they could accept last week.

Neither party wanted the funding talks to collide with ongoing negotiations over a new pandemic aid package. While a bipartisan group of House lawmakers have tried breaking the impasse with a bill of their own, it appears unlikely to get much traction, as much of the time and attention of Congress will likely be taken up by the battle for the late Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg's seat.
