Frank Luntz, a famous (or, depending on who you ask, infamous) pollster generally associated with the Republican Party said that after conducting a focus group of both Democrats and GOP members, he found that the only real point of commonality between them was a belief in the need for more stimulus measures, CNBC reported. Luntz said there was little to no unity anywhere else and observed that the respondents in fact actively resisted agreeing with their opposite numbers, indicating that the new president, despite his recent calls for unity, will find establishing common ground extremely difficult over the next four years.
In the focus group, 85 percent of Democrats wanted a new stimulus package; fewer Republicans did, but they still were a majority, about 55 to 60 percent. A different, more recent poll, presented similar results, showing that 81 percent of Democrats and 56 percent of Republicans agree that a new aid package is needed. Another poll from December showed even stronger bipartisan support; its data showed that 88 percent of Democrats and 74 percent of Republicans wanted a new package.
