The Department of Education said it is going to forgive $55.6 million in loans for students who attended three specific institutions, said the New York Times. The move affects about 1,800 students whowent to Westwood College, Marinello Schools of Beauty and the Court Reporting Institute. It will be through a program that allows borrowers to have their debt wiped out if they believe they were scammed. The Times said it is the first time since 2017 that the government forgave debt from schools other than Corinthian Colleges, ITT Technical Institute and American Career Institute.
So far the White House has forgiven $1.5 billion worth of student debt for 92,000 borrowers or 0.861 percent of theĀ $1.73 trillion worth of outstanding balances.
