House Democrats are trying once more to get some manner of pandemic aid passed as they introduced a new $2.2 trillion bill that, among other things, would send a new round of stimulus checks, which would be more generous than the previous one, said CNBC. The bill, sharing the same name as the $3.4 trillion HEROES Act which proved too pricy for Congressional Republicans, would expand eligibility for stimulus payments to include $500 for the parents of full-time students and adult dependents under the age of 24. The program would also use Taxpayer Identification Numbers versus Social Security Numbers to guide payments.
Democrats and the White House have resumed their negotiations, said CNN, but the new bill is less of a starting point and more of a contingency. In the events talks fail, as many expect them to, then the package will be released to the House floor for a vote so that vulnerable Democrats can go back to their home districts saying they at least voted for something.
