Half of All Job Gains Last Month Came from Lower-Wage Positions

Waiters, hotel workers, hairdressers and other jobs that are typically associated with lower-than-average pay are roaring back, as they have made up about half of all payroll gains in June, said the Wall Street Journal. This has been largely attributed to people feeling more comfortable going out again, leading to increased demand for workers in places like retail stores, restaurants and other service sector positions.

Of the 850,000 jobs added last month, 343,000 were in restaurants and other hospitality businesses; 67,000 were in retailers, especially clothing stores; and personal services businesses like salons and dry cleaners added 29,000. Drawing people into these jobs, according to the Journal, has been due to, one, certain states cutting off federal unemployment benefits early and, two, a growing number of businesses offering bonuses to new workers. There are also simple pay raises, according to the Washington Post, which noted that the average wages at restaurants now tops $15 an hour.
