COVID-19 may afflict both the rich and poor alike, but only the rich get to quarantine in a luxury apartment recently set up by a Swiss hotel for that exact purpose, according to CNBC. Le Bijou, one of the ritziest hotels in the world, is now offering guests luxury quarantine apartments set apart from the hoi polloi, who must shelter in their regular old homes. For $800 to $2,000 a night (and keep in mind, quarantines can be up to two weeks), guests get meals prepared by a personal chef delivered to their door, a private gym, in-room spa treatments and a home office. Those who want to spend a little bit more can also schedule twice daily nurse's visits for $1,800 or hire an around-the-clock nurse for $4,800 a day.
Assuming that a guest took such an apartment on the relative cheap ($800 per night), and assuming that the quarantine will last 14 days, then that guest will spend, at a minimum, $11,200. If the guest went with all the bells and whistles ($2,000 per night), the bill would be $28,000 for the room, plus $67,200 for the round-the-clock nurse, for a total of $95,200. Oh, and add on to that a $500 test for the coronavirus, despite the fact that the Swiss government said tests can be paid for through its compulsory health insurance.
The hotel chain CEO said that he decided to provide this service because he noticed that fewer guests were seeking the typical three-night bookings, and more were making reservations for 14 days or more, specifically because of quarantines. It is currently unknown whether he has read Edgar Allan Poe's Masque of the Red Death.
