Users Face Delays With IRS 'Where's my Refund' Tool

Taxpayers who want to know where their refund is often turn to the link on the website that literally says, "Where's my refund?" But some users are finding that, due to technical glitches, their question remains unanswered for now, reported Fast Company. The page returns either a glitched result, or cannot be accessed at all, leading users to vent their frustration on Twitter. The IRS has acknowledged the problem, but it said that while the tool for tracking the refund might not work, there is no need to call the IRS, as the error does not mean the refund itself has been delayed.

Yet refunds in general might be sent out a little more slowly than normal. The House Ways and Means Committee, in a recent letter to IRS Commissioner Charles Rettig, said that it was "alarmed" over processing delays at the agency. The letter noted that, despite having had more time to prepare than last year, the agency has processed far fewer returns than could be expected, given last year's figures. By around Feb. 14, 2020, the agency had processed 40 million returns; the committee's letter said that, so far this year, it has processed only 14 million. The letter also noted that there are still 6.9 million 2019 returns that have yet to be processed. Further, delays will likely continue, as the committee pointed out that two of the four IRS locations processing refunds, Kansas City and Austin, have been closed due to inclement weather.
