President Biden cancelled more than $9 billion in student debt for 125,000 Americans who qualify for relief under existing programs, the White House announced.

The total includes $5.2 billion for 53,000 borrowers under Public Service Loan Forgiveness programs, nearly $2.8 billion for nearly 51,000 borrowers through fixes to income-driven repayment, and $1.2 billion for nearly 22,000 borrowers with total or permanent disabilities.

The total approved debt cancellation by the administration to date is $127 billion for nearly 3.6 million Americans, the announcement stated.

The president’s original student loan forgiveness plan was struck down by the U.S. Supreme Court in June, forcing borrowers to resume repaying their loans on Oct. 1. The plan would have cancelled more than $400 billion in student debt for about 43 million borrowers.

In August, the administration introduced a new income-driven repayment plan, Saving on a Valuable Education (SAVE).
