Social media has taken the world by storm; so much so that social media positions exist in companies across all kinds of different industries. The benefits of a good social media team are invaluable. But everyone has heard of Twitter feuds and other social media mistakes that have cost celebrities and companies dearly. The same holds true for your own social media. So what do you do if a friend posts a less-than-professional picture of you, or something less than politically correct ends up next to your name? Here are three big steps from Time on how to survive:

1. Delete the evidence. Nothing is ever truly gone from the Internet, but as soon as you are aware of the issue, delete the offending tweet, photo, status update, etc.
2. Apologize if necessary. If you walk into the office and things seem quiet, don’t dig yourself a hole by apologizing right away. However, if it’s clear you’re the sole topic of conversation, odds you’re going to need to apologize, preferably in-person.
3. Clean up. Go back through old posts with a fine-toothed comb and make sure they’re all up to scratch. If not, delete away.
