Number of Billion-Dollar Climate-Related Natural Disasters Pushes Records

The number of climate-related natural disasters—such as wildfires, hurricanes and droughts—creating more than $1 billion in damage has now tied previous annual records in just nine months, according to Bloomberg. So far, there have been 16 such events this year, making this year tied with the annual 2011 and 2015 totals. Bloomberg noted that this tie might be broken and 2020 take the top spot for such disasters, as there are still three months left in the year. This year has already exceeded the average between 2015 and 2019 of 13.8.

Bloomberg added that last month was the hottest September on record.

However, another less dire milestone has also been reached: $1 trillion of "Green" bonds have now been issued. This record was reached when $215 billion worth of green bonds were issued last quarter, close to the $270 billion raised all of last year and 15 times more than was raised in 2013.
