Pass-Through Entities Confound Corp. Tax Reform

HiResSpeaker of the House John Boehner said that, despite Republican majorities in both chambers, corporate tax reform is, at best, a 50-50 proposition, according to Bloomberg. This is because the proliferation of partnerships and S corporations, which he said make up 70 percent of businesses, versus those with more traditional structures which are subject to the nominal 35 percent tax rate. These businesses, say Bloomberg, are concerned that if reform does not take them into account, they will lose valuable tax breaks without getting any benefits from a rate cut, a complicated situation that that lawmakers say they are trying to address. Navigating this issue will take time, and so the speaker was not optimistic that corporate tax reform will be coming up in the immediate future.
