Financial Anxiety Is Driving Burnout

A new report from Modern Health shows how deeply financial stress is shaping the mental health of younger workers. In a survey of 1,000 Americans aged 18 to 44, 79% said it’s the main reason for their burnout.

Fast Company reports that it’s also stopping people from taking care of themselves. 74% have delayed taking time off due to financial concerns, and 66% said financial stress has kept them from seeking mental health care. Even when they do take time off, 77% keep checking their email.

The pressure to stay productive constant. 68% said financial anxiety affects their ability to focus, and more than half admitted to waiting waiting until symptoms become unmanageable before looking for support. While 96% agree prevention is important, most don’t see that support reflected at work. Only 31% of employees believe their employer actually prioritizes mental health.

That disconnect is pushing workers to consider leaving. 52% have thought about quitting because of mental health struggles, but 69% say they’re staying put, even in toxic environments, because they don’t feel financially safe to make a change.

Nearly three quarters of respondents said existing mental health programs just mask a culture that deprioritizes well-being. Many feel stuck, wanting care but unable to access it. And for younger workers, financial pressure isn’t just draining, it’s defining their relationship to work.
