Report: NYC Black Workers With College Degree Earn $21K Less Than White Counterparts

A recent report indicates that a college degree does have rewards, but those rewards are about $21,000 smaller if you're Black, according to MarketWatch. The report, by New York City’s Department of Consumer and Worker Protection, based on several data sources, found that Black New York City residents whose highest educational level is a bachelor's degree earn, on average, about $42,800 a year. White workers of comparable education, meanwhile, make an average of $64,700, which comes to a $21,900 difference.

MarketWatch said the report calls into question the idea of college as a social equalizer. It brings to mind a 2018 Georgetown University study that found, on average, that women with bachelor's degrees make as much as men with associate's degrees, women with master's degrees make as much as men with bachelor's degrees and so on for each successive level of educational attainment.
