Indian Delivery Company Introduces Period Leave

Zomato, one of the largest food delivery companies in India, has introduced a new policy allowing period leave, according to CNN Business. The policy, which includes both women and transgender individuals, allows for one day of leave for each menstrual cycle. While a few other companies have introduced similar policies, this is the largest employer so far to have done so. The CEO, a man, said that while he cannot fully understand what women go through, he said that he trusts them when they say they sometimes need a rest, and so such a policy is vital in creating an inclusive and diverse culture at the company.

This policy is especially unusual in India, where menstruation remains a taboo, which has meant a great deal of social shame over the process. CNN noted that other countries have had such policies for years, such as Japan, which has granted menstrual leave since 1947.
