SEC Charges CEO and President of Synergy Settlement Services with Fraudulent Operation of Special Needs Pooled Trusts       
2022-76, May 2, 2022The Securities and Exchange Commission today announced fraud charges against Synergy Settlement Services, Inc., CEO Jason D. Lazarus, Esq., both based in Orlando, FL, and President Anthony F. Prieto, Jr. of Tampa, FL, for allegedly defrauding individuals with disabilities into believing that the individuals were placing their funds in a pooled trust managed by a non-profit association. According to the SEC’s charges, the defendants instead used a non-profit trustee as a shell company to profit from disabled personal injury victims.

2022-75, April 29, 2022 The Securities and Exchange Commission’s Office of Investor Education and Advocacy (OIEA) commemorated National Financial Capability Month by hosting a slate of outreach and education events for investors. Medley Management and Former Co-CEOs to Pay $10 Million Penalty for Misleading Investors and Clients 
2022-73, April 28, 2022 The Securities and Exchange Commission today charged publicly-traded asset manager Medley Management and its former co-CEOs, Brook B. Taube and Seth B. Taube, with making misrepresentations to investors and clients that created the illusion of Medley’s likely future growth. The respondents have agreed to settle the SEC’s charges and will collectively pay $10 million in civil penalties. 

SEC Charges Brazilian Mining Company with Misleading Investors about Safety Prior to Deadly Dam Collapse           
2022-72, April 28, 2022 The Securities and Exchange Commission today charged Vale S.A., a publicly traded Brazilian mining company and one of the world’s largest iron ore producers, with making false and misleading claims about the safety of its dams prior to the January 2019 collapse of its Brumadinho dam. The collapse killed 270 people, caused immeasurable environmental and social harm, and led to a loss of more than $4 billion in Vale’s market capitalization.  

Inspector General Carl W. Hoecker to Retire from SEC     
2022-71, April 27, 2022 — The Securities and Exchange Commission today announced that Inspector General Carl W. Hoecker will retire from the agency as of May 7, 2022. He has led the Office of Inspector General (OIG) since Feb. 11, 2013. Rebecca Sharek, Deputy Inspector General for Audits, Evaluations, and Special Projects, will serve as Acting Inspector General. 

SEC Charges Archegos and its Founder with Massive Market Manipulation Scheme 
2022-70, April 27, 2022 — The Securities and Exchange Commission today charged Sung Kook (Bill) Hwang, the owner of family office Archegos Capital Management, LP (Archegos), with orchestrating a fraudulent scheme that resulted in billions of dollars in losses. The SEC also charged Archegos’s Chief Financial Officer, Patrick Halligan; head trader, William Tomita; and Chief Risk Officer, Scott Becker for their roles in the fraudulent scheme. 

SEC Announces Older Investor Roundtable Event to Be Held April 28             
2022-69, April 25, 2022 — The Securities and Exchange Commission will hold a virtual event on April 28 along with the North American Securities Administrators Association (NASAA) and the AARP to examine the latest challenges and issues affecting the senior investor community. The Older Investor Roundtable will include panel discussions geared toward older investors, consumer advocates, and financial professionals nationwide as topics will include common frauds perpetrated against older investors, risks associated with digital assets and blockchain technology, and older client servicing and related issues.
