With Colleges Closed for Pandemic, Students Increasingly Demand Refunds

With many colleges campuses closed due to the global pandemic, students are increasingly asking that their schools refund them for expenses they're not actually using, such as room and board, according to CNBC. While some colleges are reimbursing students for various services, the particulars are different from school to school, and none of these refunds so far includes tuition. While colleges argue, in this case, that virtual classes are still in session, many students are saying these are a pale substitute. With this in mind, students at Brown University, Boston University, Drexel University, George Washington Universityand the University of Miami have all have filed class action lawsuits against their schools, accusing them of breach of contract and unjust enrichment. CNBC predicted that this number will likely grow as time goes on. Schools are likely loathe to give out tuition refunds, as they themselves are facing financial pressures due to projected enrollment drops, as students consider taking a gap year until the crisis is under control.
