Former Billionaire Succeeds in Giving Away Nearly All Money to Charity

Chuck Feeney, the founder of retail chain Duty Free Shoppers, recently closed his philanthropic foundation because he has succeeded in his goal to give away (nearly) all his money to charity, according to MarketWatch. Over the course of 38 years, he donated literally billions of dollars to various causes, ranging from supporting the Northern Irish peace process to encouraging tech development in New York City to improving the Vietnamese health care system. He also used his money to advance social causes, such as putting $62 million toward a campaign to abolish the death penalty in the United States and $76 million to support the passage of the Affordable Care Act. It's unknown precisely how much the 89-year-old Feeny kept for himself, though it is apparently enough to maintain a small apartment in San Francisco. He also set aside $2 million for his wife's retirement.
