Google’s former senior vice president of people operations, Laszlo Bock, has likely seen more résumés than most people. Over the course of 15 years at the company, he has reviewed over 20,000 résumés, and through it all, he said he has seen the same five mistakes come up over and over again. In a recent article in Inc., he cautioned job seekers against any of the following missteps:
Not formatting correctly: if the résumé isn’t properly formatted, it will be challenging to read, which does not endear people to hiring managers.
Confidential information: hiring managers know that certain jobs require discretion, such as consulting. Including, or even alluding to, another firm’s confidential information does not fill companies with confidence on how you’ll handle theirs.
Typos: This one seems obvious, yet many résumés still contain typos, grammatical errors and other little mistakes that indicate a lack of attention to detail.
Too long: Do not write the résumé version of War and Peace. Bock advises that résumés include no more than one page for every 10 years of work experience.
