Do I have to be a member of the Society?ⓘ
Yes, community service is a member benefit. You may also serve on a community as an associate member.
Is there a fee to join a community? ⓘ
No. Community membership is included in your member benefits.
How often do communities meet? ⓘ
Depending on the individual communities, meetings can be scheduled anywhere from once a month to quarterly. Community members receive meeting notices approximately two weeks prior to the event date.
How long do community meetings last? ⓘ
Duration of meetings depend on each individual community, which can range from a half hour to two hours.
Do all meetings take place at the Society offices? ⓘ
No. Though most communities do meet at the NYCPA’s 200 Madison Ave location, some take place at the offices of community members, and some happen virtually.
What if I am unable to attend in person, can I call in? ⓘ
Yes. We offer a teleconferencing for almost all community meetings, as well as video conferencing for certain meetings.
Is there a limit to how many communities I can serve on? ⓘ
No. We do not limit the number of communities a member may serve on at any given time.
How long may I serve on a community? ⓘ
There is no limit as to length of service on communities (except for oversight communities, which involve automatic appointments of community chairs).
What if there is another member from my company on the same community?ⓘ
No problem: We allow multiple members from the same firm to serve on communities together.
Do I have to wait for the beginning of the community year to join? ⓘ
No. Members can apply for community service at anytime during the community year.
Do I get reimbursed for any type of travel to the meeting? ⓘ

How can I find out the next meeting date for a community? ⓘ
All scheduled community meetings are posted on the Society’s website, along with a list of current members.
