Jacob Thiessen is a Senior Advisor in the Policy Division of the Financial Crimes Enforcement Network (FinCEN), a bureau of the U.S. Treasury Department. He has worked in the Policy Division since late 2020, focusing on rulemaking in connection with beneficial ownership information reporting. Mr. Thiessen is also an adjunct professor at the William & Mary Law School, teaching courses on anti-money laundering and financial sanctions. He came to FinCEN's Policy Division from the Treasury Department's Office of General Counsel, where he provided legal advice to FinCEN, the Office of Terrorist Finance and Financial Crimes, the Office of Foreign Assets Control, and the Office of Intelligence and Analysis. Mr. Thiessen began his legal career in private practice, advising financial institutions on federal consumer finance compliance issues. He has a J.D. (magna cum laude) from the Georgetown University Law Center. Mr. Thiessen also has a Ph.D. in history from the Johns Hopkins University and received a Fulbright Scholarship for study in the United Kingdom.
